Enclosed or Open Trays: What Cats Prefer
Hooded boxes are bought by people and used by cats, and those two groups want different things.
What hoods solve
Litter scatter and visual privacy in a busy room, and they keep smell out of the room between cleans.
What hoods cost
They concentrate odour inside the box, where the cat is. A hooded box that is not cleaned daily is unpleasant to enter, and cats vote by going elsewhere.
A reasonable compromise
High-sided open trays contain scatter nearly as well as a hood without trapping the smell. Where a cat already uses a hooded box happily, leave it alone.
